Why Use A Car Oil Changing Service When You Can Do It Yourself?

Part of owning a car is performing preventive maintenance. One of the most common and important of these tasks are oil changes. While this task is rather simple, and quite possible to do on your own, there are some good reasons for taking your vehicle to an oil changing service.

Getting Rid of the Old Oil

It might not seem like a big deal, but you cannot put old motor oil in a container and place it in the trash for pick up. Well, if you contact the trash removal service and ask, they may have an option for this, but you will need to follow their instructions. An oil changing service will take care of the old oil for you. It will be done in a manner compliant with hazardous waste removal regulations.

No Mess

Changing the oil in a vehicle is messy. Oil splashes everywhere -- both on the ground and on your clothes. You do not want to leave some oil soaking into the ground or it can stain your driveway. Cleaning it up can be time-consuming and does not always work. Your clothes will be hard to clean, too. Basically, they will be turned into dirty-chore clothes. When you take your vehicle in for an oil change, you do not have to worry about making a mess or cleaning it up.

Extras

You can ask to have the full service done during the oil change. This will include having your brake fluid, coolant, and washer fluid topped off, a quick inspection of the belts and hoses, and having the chassis lubricated if necessary. While it will cost a bit more than a simple oil change, it will save you time. In addition, a mechanic is more likely than you to notice a problem before it gets too bad. You will be able to have something fixed while it is still a small issue, which will save money over waiting until it is a big problem.

Look in your car's manual to see how often you need to have the oil changed. Many times there will be a time period and a mileage amount at which you should have the work done. If the manual says to change it every 4 months or 5,000 miles, be sure to have it done when the first criteria is reached. In other words, if you travel 5,000 miles in the first month, do not wait another 3 months before having the maintenance done. Bad oil in a vehicle's engine is a sure way to cause damage.
